Public Art: The Big View
3 Evenings of video and conversation based on “Art of the MOOC”
Tuesdays: Sept 27, Oct 4, Oct 11
6:30pm – 8:00pm
LCC Downtown, 101 West 10th Ave, Room 308, Third Floor
The City of Eugene Public Art Program welcomes you to an exciting overview of global public art, also known as socially-engaged art or public practice. Gather to view a 30-minute video followed by discussion. Public Art takes many forms, and we’ll examine 3 of its main themes:
1) Public Art and Spatial Politics (Sept 27)
2) Fictions, Alternative Structures, and Mock-Institutions (Oct 4)
3) Activism and Social Movements (Oct 11)
The videos are part of a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) called “Art of the MOOC: Public Art and Pedagogy”, from Duke University and Creative Time. Your facilitator, Vicki Amorose, completed the inaugural course in 2015. She is pleased to bring this material to her community, with enthusiastic support from Professor Pedro Lasch, who created the MOOC. Here in Eugene, our intention is not to teach the full course, but to offer enlightening conversation about art.
Feel free to attend all three sessions or pick and choose. No formal registration is required – just RSVP to Vicki Amorose at artwrite@peak.org.
For a deeper experience, you can access all course materials and create public art when you enroll in Art of the MOOC: Public Art and Pedagogy. The course is free at https://www.coursera.org/learn/moocs
